Physical Education

Vision

Our vision for PE at Seaview aims to inspire all children to develop basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive to achieve their personal best. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mind-set to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies through continuing to support our children’s well-being.

Curriculum

Our PE lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach to PE and the objectives set in the National Curriculum. Our objectives aid us to ensure that our children develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sports and activities, and lead healthy, active lives.

Get Set 4 PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up throughout our school. PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning.

In EYFS, we encourage the physical development of our children in nursery and reception as an integral part of their learning. The physical development of our children underpins the planning within the curriculum, focusing on fundamental skills, negotiating space safely around others and learning how to handle and use different equipment. We encourage the children to develop confidence and control of the way they move and give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors.

In KS1 and KS2, we create opportunities for children to transfer and build on their declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge and physical skills through multiple units of learning, including: invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, swimming, dance and gymnastics. By applying learning in different environments, children are able to recall embedded knowledge. Fundamental movements skills underpin all activities in PE and these units allow children to develop these skills in isolation and in combination, developing their competency as they move throughout the school.

Working collaboratively with our Sports Partnership provides a wealth of opportunities and experiences for our children to be physically active through clubs, competitions, activity days, skills festivals and well-being days. We ensure that we provide equal opportunity for all children, promoting inclusion and participation to engage all children in physical activity.

SEND & Inclusion

The PE curriculum at Seaview holds high expectations for all. It inspires children to lead healthy and activity lifestyles, and broaden their experiences of sport and fitness activities. Our approach to PE for children with SEND is centred on inclusion, adaptation, and personalised support. We believe in providing opportunities for children to engage in physical activities at their own pace and level, while also ensuring that their individual needs are met. We ensure lessons are accessible by adapting space, activities and equipment to remove barriers to learning. Lesson planning also includes adaptions for teachers when delivering lessons and the teaching of particular skills, that can be child specific, to cater to the needs of all children. Get Set 4 PE provide a wide range of resources to support staff in the delivery of PE lessons for children with specific special educational needs and disabilities.

Through our Sports Partnership, we provide our children with opportunities to attend skills festivals and competitions that are inclusive and increase participation levels of physical activity regardless of their need.
