Maths

Vision

Our vision for maths at Seaview Primary School is to ensure every child is given a broad, balanced, engaging and relevant curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.  We aim to prepare our children not only for secondary school, but also for maths in context of their everyday lives including further education and careers.

 Curriculum

Seaview Primary has embraced the Inspire Maths mastery curriculum, which has been seamlessly integrated and adapted to cater to the specific requirements of our school and children. Our focus lies on sequential learning, ensuring that previous knowledge serves as a foundation for new concepts, thereby influencing future learning. Consistent teaching and learning methodologies are applied across the school to ensure the consolidation of key concepts and knowledge.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), mathematics centres on fostering a deep grasp of numbers up to 10. In nursery, maths becomes an integral part of the continuous provision, with adults guiding and facilitating learning opportunities alongside child-led exploration. This approach persists into Reception, where mathematics continues to be explored within the continuous provision. Additionally, children engage in a structured daily maths group session led by the teacher, following a carefully planned sequence of learning activities.

In Key Stage 1, mathematics is a daily fixture, where children are introduced to new concepts and skills. They then demonstrate their understanding through independent work or collaborative group activities. Following the EYFS model, maths is approached using the concrete, pictorial, abstract method, fostering a deeper comprehension. Children are encouraged to articulate the reasoning behind their solutions, indicating a heightened understanding. Throughout this stage, they progressively develop a solid grasp of numbers up to 100, including mastery of place value, comparison, ordering, the four operations, units of measurement, and fractions.

Throughout Key Stage 2, maths progresses incrementally, with each year building upon the foundation laid in previous years. Lessons begin with a recap of prior learning and skills, followed by the introduction or consolidation of concepts, nurturing the development of proficient mathematicians. As children advance through this stage, they gradually rely less on manipulatives, though this method is still utilised when introducing new concepts. Their mathematical knowledge expands to encompass a deeper understanding of fractions and decimals. Upper Key Stage 2 children are exposed to additional mathematical areas including percentages, ratio, and algebra.

 SEND

At Seaview, we are committed to provide inclusive mathematical learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We employ a range of teaching strategies, resources, and interventions to support children with SEND in developing their mathematical skills and understanding. Our teachers differentiate instruction, provide additional support, scaffold learning, or make adaptations as needed to meet the unique needs of our children.

Our goal is to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full mathematical potential.
